What is

Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) is a field related to the study and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. Think of it as physical therapy for the brain, mouth, and neck.

There are a variety of factors that can contribute to communication challenges, starting with the formulation of a thought, to finding the right word, to producing the word clearly using the tongue, teeth, and other articulators of the mouth. Speech and language are complicated processes!

In addition to speech, SLPs also treat feeding and swallowing disorders. Feeding disorders affect a child’s ability to take in enough food in to sustain nutrition and growth. This can be affected by a number of reasons, including other developmental disorders, sensory integration challenges, and oral motor development.

Swallowing disorders in adults (also called dysphagia) are structural and/or muscular challenges that can result in inefficient and/or unsafe swallowing.

SLPs do so much! Find out if if your needs may be addressed by Vermont Speech and Swallow.
